I Chronicles

First Chronicles, twenty-nine chapters, lists the line
Of key births (from Adam) to King David o'er time,
Tells how he then the ark at Jerusalem placed,
But through his numbering Israel God's wrath faced.
To his dream to build God's Temple, the Lord said "nay,
Solomon your son shall, but your throne's for alway!"
One excerpt : David longs, his men o'erhear him tell,
For drink from Philistine-guarded Bethlehem well.
Three of his best soldiers fetch for him: their reward?
He pours out the blood-risked water unto the Lord!
A new Bethlehem well may freely now be sought -
The Lord, Bethlehem-born, gives His Spirit, blood-bought.
